North of Hobart, on the banks of Tasmania’s Derwent River, Moorilla Estate vineyards is home to a cellar door and winery, a restaurant, a micro-brewery and the Museum of Old and New Art – the largest privately funded museum in the southern hemisphere. In this coastal landscape setting, the eight dynamic MONA pavilions radiate out; their bold, diamond-shaped steel frames anchored to the ground by large, off-form concrete blades. Warped planes of silver aluminium reflect the changing environment, and overscaled chain-mesh vegetation screens between the pavilions ensure privacy for visitors.
