Practice

As architects, masterplanners and interior designers, we know the fundamental drivers of city living are changing.

As such, we acknowledge the significant challenges facing the world today, addressing the evolving urban condition with creativity and pragmatism.

Architects for a changing world

Our experience of designing across the world allows us to apply broad strategic thinking to the critical issues of today, ranging from designing for carbon-negative cities and climate change, to the provision of affordable housing, the new dynamics of the workplace, and the need for safe and inclusive public spaces.

Solving the right problems

Knowing the right problems to solve comes with experience. New issues can't be tackled with old thinking, so our design process challenges assumptions and traditional ways of doing things to develop new approaches and solutions. We look beyond the brief to solve the right problems and ask the questions that can unlock the full potential of a

project.

Places for people

Our approach to design is generous and open hearted. We are inspired by designing places that create joy and delight, that are great to experience, and which improve the quality of daily life. We believe every project offers the opportunity to make a positive impact and create something that just makes life better.

Creating tangible value

From planning consents to optimisation strategies, to building compelling branded products, and carefully considered interiors with market appeal, our work offers tangible commercial benefits for clients. With each project we look to maximise the potential to integrate social, economic and environmental value for all, with purposeful schemes which are a delight to use, efficient to run and prioritise well-being and quality of life.

Design to delivery

We have the skill and know-how to translate strategic design thinking into beautiful, contextual projects. Inspired by the process of making and craftsmanship, we translate creative concepts through form, materials, and detailing to produce honest, clearly expressed architecture. We have designed and delivered a wide range of complex projects and are innovative in our approach, harnessing the potential of modern methods of construction to increase speed and efficiency.

Design leadership

We are great believers in collaboration but we never shy away from the need for clear and confident design leadership. AFK is led by an experienced and highly motivated ensemble of Directors , who have worked together for many years and share a unique understanding and working ethos, strengthened by the skills and expertise of our dedicated team. We have weathered recessions and booms and have learnt invaluable lessons from both. We ask the right questions at the outset of a project, identifying opportunities and constraints that inform the right design solutions.

Responsible designers

We recognise the critical role that we, as architects, have to play in reducing environmental impacts, and by designing and building responsibly. Our approach to sustainability addresses the environmental, social and economic aspects of design. We are members of UKGBC and ensure that our projects provide lasting value and flexibility, and contribute to wider placemaking and well-being initiatives. AFK is committed to working closely with our clients and consultant teams to ensure that sustainability principles are embedded in our projects from inception to completion and beyond, operating a process of continuous monitoring and review to ensure best practice.
