The Dumont is a prime riverside residential development for St James on Albert Embankment in London. The challenge was to create a contemporary but complementary backdrop to frame the panoramic unrivalled views across London, including the House of Parliament, while creating a warm and inviting residential experience to complete a trio of buildings by St James on the south bank of the River Thames.
Amenity with a difference
St James’ vision was to create a relaxing, revitalising and entertaining residential experience complemented by an integrated collection of carefully managed spaces. AFK worked closely with St James to design The Dumont’s extensive amenities, which include a 10-pin bowling alley, billiard room, cinema room and lounge cinema within the lower ground level, as well as private dining, library and a lounge space on level 12. All of the amenities on level 12 connect to a landscaped terrace, offering expansive views across the river. The amenities in the Dumont also have access to an infinity pool, gym and spa facilities located in the neighbouring Corniche building.
Soho House meets Ivy League
Our design concept for the interior design of he amenity spaces fuses contemporary and modern 'Soho House chic' with a more traditional 'Ivy League' college style, with classic patterns and more robust and casual materials. The contrast between these two very different aesthetics creates a playful drama within the styling of the amenity spaces, lending the air of a contemporary but unstuffy and welcoming residents' club. On the 12th floor, the Observatory offers impressive views of the London skyline and serves as The Dumont’s own private 'club' space. Residents can use the space as they please, with areas for relaxation, meeting or social events, and private dining space for residents also accessed via the Observatory, which offers a stylish venue featuring furniture design classics, luxurious finishes and floor-to ceiling windows, with an impressive view as the backdrop to events.
The 'secret garden'
The Observatory also connects to a 'secret garden' terrace; a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, largely hidden from view and filled with English courtyard planting and splashes of contemporary colour. The terrace has secluded seating areas hidden within the garden, where perfectly framed views of London’s finest landmarks can be enjoyed.
10-pin bowling, games room and cinema
The Dumont's integrated 10-pin bowling alley is sited in the basement of the scheme, and features a distinctive twist on traditional bowling iconography, with bespoke fittings and luxurious furnishings. The games room has a similar feel with a full-sized American pool table, cosy banquette seating and an atmosphere evoking the classic members’ clubs with a modern edge.
